Comment on Proposed Perchlorate Rule

The EPA is proposing a health-based Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) for perchlorate of 0.02 mg/L (20 µg/L) and enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for perchlorate of 20 µg/L, 40 µg/L, or 80 µg/L. This will require water systems to conduct monitoring for perchlorate in drinking water and take mitigation actions if the level exceeds the MCL. Find information about the proposed rule here.

Perchlorate is commonly used in rocket fuel and fireworks, and may occur naturally in some parts of the US.

EPA is accepting public comment on the proposed rule until March 9. Find information on submitting public comments here. There will also be an online public hearing on February 19.

Educate Local Officials

Vermont Rural Water has created a new webpage to educate elected officials about the water industry. Our goal is to help legislators understand capacity limitations at water and wastewater systems and how this should be considered when making new policies about housing and development.

The webpage has information, a video, and case studies. It can be found at vtruralwater.org/water-sewer-housing/

Please share this page with your town officials and state legislators and invite them to tour your facility and learn more about drinking water and wastewater.
