Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator – Sherburne Fire District #1 (Killington)

The Sherburne Fire District #1, located in Killington, Vermont, is seeking a full-time Treatment Plant Operator at their .400 MGD Rotating Biological Contactor facility.

Wastewater Treatment Facilities collect waste from residences as well as commercial buildings and treat it extensively, so it can be discharged into receiving waters with no environmental impact.

Being a wastewater treatment operator means that you are an integral part of your community, ensuring that your environment is preserved by operating and maintaining your wastewater facility according to state and federal regulations, mainly the Clean Water Act.

Our environment is changing, and we would like someone to be a part of our team that deals with the challenges of climate change. The new team member must be up for the challenge of dealing with the new issues posed by climate change.

Qualifications: 

  • A Grade II Vermont State Operator Certification is preferred but not necessary
  • Willingness to become an apprentice through the Vermont Rural Water Association’s Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Program will provide classes and on-the-job training to support the new candidate to become a certified wastewater operator.
  • Valid Vermont Driver’s License required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
  • Preferably live within 45 minutes’ drive of Killington.
  • Willingness to be a part of preserving Vermont’s waterways.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform day-to-day lab testing for operational control of the wastewater facility as required by the State and federal regulations.
  • General upkeep of the buildings and grounds.
  • Learn how to operate and perform maintenance of the wastewater facility and collection system.
  • Routine maintenance of all associated equipment.
  • Have strong record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Be available to work on a flexible schedule, including but not limited to, some weekends, holidays, and on-call hours.
