Description
What contamination events warrant shock chlorination procedures? We will discuss events such as flooding, loss of water system pressure, and shock chlorination of water storage tanks and distribution piping. Continuous chlorination requires knowledge by water system operators to ensure that public health is protected. Chlorine chemistry is an integral part of water treatment that should be understood by water system operators. Students will learn what breakpoint chlorination is and how to ensure they are achieving it at their treatment facilities. Sodium hypochlorite feed equipment can cause problems; we will look at the issues and how to avoid a sodium hypochlorite feed pump malfunctions. This training session will look at shock chlorination procedures, water storage tank disinfection, and pipeline disinfection.

The class will also look at proper dechlorination procedures when flushing hydrants or after shock chlorinating. We will explore dechlorination methods and equipment.
