Managing Disinfection By-Products
Description
The management of Disinfection Byproducts (DBP), including regulated DBPs like TTHMs and HAA5, is a balancing act consisting of effective microbial pathogen inactivation and reducing natural organic matter in treated drinking water.
This training will cover the following topics:
- Regulatory Compliance: understanding Stage 1 and Stage 2 disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rules (DBPRs).
- DBP Formation Chemistry: how disinfectants like chlorine and chloramines react with naturally occurring organic carbon.
- Optimization Strategies: techniques for reducing DBP formation, including enhanced coagulation, changing disinfectant application points, and alternative disinfection methods (UV, ozone).
- Distribution Management: managing water age, tank mixing, and flushing programs to control DBP levels in the distribution system.
