Cybersecurity Alerts

Two alerts have been issued recently about cybersecurity concerns facing water and wastewater systems:

Tank Gauges

Automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems are being targeted in the US. If you have remote monitoring for your storage tanks, you should use a strong password and remove them from the public-facing internet. If remove access is necessary, use a firewall, access control list (ACL), or virtual private network (VPN) for protection.

Public Records Requests

There have been reports of AI service providers making public records requests for SCADA logs, daily logs, flow rates, reservoir and storage tank levels, equipment run times, and other parameters. EPA encourages water and wastewater systems to “consider the risks of disclosing sensitive operational information…Such data could be used to jeopardize continuity of service, endangering public health and national security.”
