3/26/26 Email Update

Cybersecurity Reminder

There continues to be an increased risk of cyber attacks due to recent global events. Continue to be extra vigilant with emails, computer systems, controls, and physical security.

Yesterday, the Vermont Intelligence Center shared information about a phishing email targeting a wastewater operator in Vermont. The email looked like it was coming from a salesperson at PipeTech, but the email address was slightly different than usual. If you received an email like this, report it to your organization’s IT department and dps.vic@list.vermont.gov

VIC says: “It has become a trend for malicious threat actors to impersonate third-party vendors for phishing attempts targeted at the water/wastewater sector. The sector is likely to continue seeing attempts of this nature and it is encouraged to remain vigilant of indicators related to phishing.”

Legacy Distribution Trainings

NEWWA has scheduled two more Legacy Distribution Certification classes:

Current water treatment operators can earn a Legacy Distribution certification without taking the distribution exam by attending one of these classes, which are hosted by the New England Water Works Association. This training is available to operators who have passed a Vermont treatment exam (Class 2, 3, or 4) and have at least 1.5 years of experience working at an eligible water system by 7/1/2029.

PLEASE NOTE: Legacy Distribution Certifications are non-transferable. If you begin working at a different water system after receiving this legacy certification, you will need to take and pass the distribution class exam to be licensed at the new system.

Stormwater Webinar

Join NEWEA’s Stormwater Committee for an in-depth webinar on April 29 to hear success stories of different methodologies using real-life case studies from New England IDDE Programs. These methods include standard top-down catchment investigations, laboratory analyses (fecal indicator bacteria and surfactants), advanced DNA techniques (Total and Human Bacteroides), Sewer Dye Testing, and CCTV.

The webinar has been approved for 1.5 TCH for wastewater operators.
