PLC Cyber Attacks

This week, dozens of water systems in multiple states have reported cyber attacks on programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The attacked PLCs were all connected to the internet, sometimes through a cellular connection, and did not have password protection.

In April, CISA released a report about attacks targeting Rockwell Automation PLCs. The report has been updated to include Schneider Electric, Siemens, and other brands. Read the updated advisory here.

What you should do:

  • Protect PLCs with a strong password

  • Remove PLCs from the internet when possible

  • Protect internet-connected PLCs (including those with a cellular connection) with a VPN, firewall, or other secure gateway

  • Contact your vendor/service provider for assistance

  • Be alert to signs that a PLC has been attacked such as unusual alarms, tanks overflowing, or changes to pump operations
