Water Quality Week

September 21-25, 2026

From September 21-25, Vermont Rural Water, Green Mountain Water Environment Association, and Vermont DEC are spearheading Water Quality Week to educate state and local officials about issues facing drinking water and wastewater systems.

You are encouraged to join by hosting a tour of your facility for decision-makers in your community. Invite your selectboard, planning commissioners, town manager, and state representatives. Discuss how issues like housing, emergency response, aging infrastructure, and workforce affect day-to-day operations and long-term capacity.

If operators don’t have these conversations with decision makers, no one else will. If you are nervous about these conversations or are unsure what to say, GMWEA and VRWA will provide you with talking points and can send someone to help host the officials at your system.

Several larger facilities are already planning to host tours but we are hoping to have smaller systems—including fire districts—participate as well.

Now is the time to begin planning a tour. Call or email your state and local officials and let them know how important it is to visit your system and see the infrastructure that protects public health and the environment in the communities they serve and represent.
