Over the course of the class, attendees will be shown how to handle crisis communications during just about every conceivable water and wastewater emergency. The session will start by demonstrating how proactive public communication with customers, community leaders, mass media, and social media sets the table for success before a crisis occurs. We’ll then walk through the key elements of a crisis communications plan and how to integrate it with your operational emergency response plan. Attendees will be shown the communications decision-making process and the tools, tactics, and messages that are used during water and wastewater emergencies.
We will then move to specific hot-button issues, like PFAS, and how to handle them successfully. We will describe an approach using both a proactive public communications plan and a well-defined crisis communications plan.
Finally, we will cover two more topics where proactive public communication greatly benefits public water: our response to COVID and our long-term plans to keep our systems safe and reliable. The COVID part of the presentations will talk about how public water was one of the rare good stories during the pandemic and how this fact can be used as a springboard to greater appreciation for our services, which we then use to received greater support for our everyday and long-term efforts. We will end on how to use proactive communications to gain support for your CIP, and outline the tools, tactics, and messages to be used with both interested audiences and the general public to gain understanding and buy-in for your plans.
