SUMMARY:Operation and Maintenance of Distribution Systems
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWater distribution systems and storage tanks are the most vulnerable part of a water system for contamination. This class will take a look at contamination vulnerabilities in a water distribution system. Attendees will learn basic hydraulics\, contamination pathways\, cross connection control\, and operation and maintenance of water storage tanks. The maintenance activities we will discuss include proactive leak detection\, distribution system flushing\, and water quality sampling. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water) \nWebinar\nThe Zoom link will be emailed to you the day before class. Please join the Zoom meeting at least 10 minutes before class starts. Click here for more information about Zoom trainings. \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association) \nCLASS FULL \nThis class will be offered again on February 6 in Orleans—you can register for it here. SUMMARY:Water Treatment: Chlorination
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWhat contamination events warrant shock chlorination procedures? We will discuss events such as flooding\, loss of water system pressure\, and shock chlorination of water storage tanks and distribution piping. Continuous chlorination requires knowledge by water system operators to ensure that public health is protected. Chlorine chemistry is an integral part of water treatment that should be understood by water system operators. Students will learn what breakpoint chlorination is and how to ensure they are achieving it at their treatment facilities. Sodium hypochlorite feed equipment can cause problems; we will look at the issues and how to avoid a sodium hypochlorite feed pump malfunctions. This training session will look at shock chlorination procedures\, water storage tank disinfection\, and pipeline disinfection. \nThe class will also look at proper dechlorination procedures when flushing hydrants or after shock chlorinating. We will explore dechlorination methods and equipment. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water) \nWebinar\nThe Zoom link will be emailed to you the day before class. SUMMARY:Wastewater Operator’s Guide to NPDES Permits and Facility Inspections
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis class will cover recent changes to permits as a result of EPA’s review of the program and updated Vermont Water Quality Standards\, updates to nForms\, and common questions/issues with the nForm. We will also go over the state process for inspecting wastewater treatment facilities\, pump stations\, and collection systems. Learn how to be prepared for an inspection\, including paper work that you will need to have available. Finally\, we will review operator succession planning and test taking tips. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Wastewater) \nProctor\nElijah Lemieux (Vermont Rural Water Association) \nInstructors\nWastewater Management Program staff

SUMMARY:Cross Connection Control
DESCRIPTION:Description\nCross connections in public water systems can cause adverse health effects to consumers if a control program is not in place. High-risk businesses such as car washes\, hospitals\, manufacturing facilities\, funeral parlors\, and veterinarian clinics may pose hazards to a water system if they do have adequate backflow prevention. \nThis course will discuss the process of identifying high-risk hazards and choosing the appropriate backflow prevention device based on the level of risk. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water) \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association)

SUMMARY:Cybersecurity and Internet Safety
DESCRIPTION:Description\nCybersecurity means protecting computers and computer-based technology from attacks and hackers. This has become a concern for water and wastewater systems in recent years\, but it can be hard for operators to understand the technical aspects of cybersecurity. This class will cover cybersecurity considerations for water and wastewater systems in an easy-to-understand format. We will begin by talking about the most important things that everyone can do to keep their personal information and computers safe\, like using strong passwords and learning to avoid dangerous emails. Next\, we will talk about ways to protect a water/wastewater system’s computers (as well as SCADA) and what to do in the event of an attack. We will look at recent case studies of water and wastewater systems that have experienced cyber attacks. Finally\, we will look at some resources that are available for free to help water and wastewater systems improve their cybersecurity. \nCredit\n2 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nHybrid\nThis class will be held simultaneously in-person at our office in Essex and on Zoom. You will receive the Zoom link by email the day before class. Click here for more information about webinar trainings. \nIn-person address:\n20 Susie Wilson Rd\, Suite B\nEssex Junction\, VT 05452\nPlease park in lower lot\, behind building. Handicap parking is available in upper lot by entrance. \nProctor\nForest Anderson (Vermont Rural Water Association) \nInstructor\nKatherine Boyk (Vermont Rural Water Association)
