SUMMARY:Developing and Updating Your Source Protection Plan (with optional work session)
DESCRIPTION:Class Description \nJoin staff from the Vermont Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division (DWGPD) and the Vermont Rural Water Association to learn about new tools in the world of source water protection planning. This training will focus on the key components of a source protection plan. Attendees will be introduced to DWGPD’s new online tools\, including a template and guidance document that you can use to develop your water system’s source protection plan (SPP) and/or source protection plan update (SPPU). There will be an interactive demonstration of the template and guidance document\, as well as a review of the new ANR Online Source Protection Plan Submission Form. These tools can streamline the process of creating and updating a water system’s source protection plan and help water systems stay in compliance with State of Vermont regulations. \nThe class itself will be 9 am to 12:30 pm. Starting at 1 pm there will be an optional work session that does not provide credit hours. \nClass Credit\n3 TCH (Water) \nOptional Work Session \nStay after class and work on your water system’s Source Protection Plan. Brad and Laura will be available to provide technical assistance and answer questions. No TCHs will be provided for the work session. \nAttendees are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop\, power cord\, their current Source Protection Plan\, and any pertinent water system documents. Power and Wi-Fi will be available. Links to various databases and resources will be provided for use during the work session. \nA second work session will be held Thursday\, March 28 from 9 am to 4 pm. SUMMARY:Discharges from Breweries and Food Industries to Your WWTF
DESCRIPTION:Description\nBreweries and specialty food industries are popular in Vermont\, but wastewater discharged by these industries to your municipal wastewater treatment facility can have significant impacts on system efficacy and operational costs. This class will provide an understanding of the pollutants discharged from these industries\, the impacts on your WWTF\, and how to work with these industries to reduce their impacts on your facility. You will learn how to assess and limit the impact of these industries before problems occur at your WWTF. \nCredit:\n4 TCH (Wastewater) \nProctor\nWayne Graham (Vermont Rural Water Association) \nInstructor \nRandy Bean

SUMMARY:OSHA: Environmental Awareness and Workplace Violence
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWorkplace violence is any act or threat of physical violence that occurs at the work site. It ranges from harassment and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. There is a potential for workplace violence at treatment plants and when water and wastewater workers are in the field. For example\, shutting off customers’ water has provoked gun violence against workers. \nIn the world we live in\, environmental awareness is a must. This class will teach how to be more aware of potential threats. We will discuss administrative steps you can take to protect employees such as having a workplace shooter plan and written safety procedures for field work. Training your team to be more aware of the environment may save their lives. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association)

SUMMARY:Cybersecurity and Internet Safety
DESCRIPTION:Description\nCybersecurity means protecting computers and computer-based technology from attacks and hackers. This has become a concern for water and wastewater systems in recent years\, but it can be hard for operators to understand the technical aspects of cybersecurity. This class will cover cybersecurity considerations for water and wastewater systems in an easy-to-understand format. We will begin by talking about the most important things that everyone can do to keep their personal information and computers safe\, like using strong passwords and learning to avoid dangerous emails. Next\, we will talk about ways to protect a water/wastewater system’s computers (as well as SCADA) and what to do in the event of an attack. We will look at recent case studies of water and wastewater systems that have experienced cyber attacks. Finally\, we will look at some resources that are available for free to help water and wastewater systems improve their cybersecurity. \nCredit\n2 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nHybrid\nThis class will be held simultaneously in-person at our office in Essex and on Zoom. SUMMARY:Water Treatment: Chlorination
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWhat contamination events warrant shock chlorination procedures? We will discuss events such as flooding\, loss of water system pressure\, and shock chlorination of water storage tanks and distribution piping. Continuous chlorination requires knowledge by water system operators to ensure that public health is protected. Chlorine chemistry is an integral part of water treatment that should be understood by water system operators. Students will learn what breakpoint chlorination is and how to ensure they are achieving it at their treatment facilities. Sodium hypochlorite feed equipment can cause problems; we will look at the issues and how to avoid a sodium hypochlorite feed pump malfunctions. This training session will look at shock chlorination procedures\, water storage tank disinfection\, and pipeline disinfection. \nThe class will also look at proper dechlorination procedures when flushing hydrants or after shock chlorinating. We will explore dechlorination methods and equipment. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water) \nWebinar\nThe Zoom link will be emailed to you the day before class.
