SUMMARY:Introduction to Wastewater Treatment
DESCRIPTION:This course introduces new wastewater staff to all components of wastewater treatment\, starting with where wastewater comes from. What are the characteristics and contaminants that make up wastewater? We will look at components of a wastewater collection system\, including pump stations. Then we will examine each process in wastewater treatment. Students will learn each treatment process and what contaminants are removed during these processes. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Wastewater) \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association)

SUMMARY:Permit Required Confined Space Entry
DESCRIPTION:Water and wastewater facilities contain many confined spaces which can be dangerous to operators. We will discuss common confined spaces in water and wastewater facilities and the difference between a confined space and a permit-required confined space. This class will build awareness about the safety hazards of a confined space such as atmospheric hazards (hydrogen sulfide\, methane); mechanical hazards; and blood-borne pathogens that are a concern for wastewater collection system workers. You will learn about the proper protective equipment\, procedures for entry into a permit-required confined space\, the need for a rescue plan\, and how to rescue a co-worker if the situation arises. SUMMARY:Busting Gender Bias
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the messages we all received growing up about gender and how those messages continue to influence our attitudes\, beliefs and behaviors today. We will review terms related to gender and discuss gender norms through facilitated small-group conversations. Participants will dive deeper into the concept of implicit bias and learn about microaggressions or “everyday bias” that frequently shows up in more subtle ways. Finally\, participants will learn how to be good allies\, and practice “ready responses” for interrupting bias. \nCredit:\n3 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nProctor\nLiz Royer\, VRWA \nInstructors\nAlison Lamagna and Missy Mackin\, Vermont Works for Women
