SUMMARY:Essential Practices and Technologies for Water Distribution
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThis class is being taught by Troy Ebbighausen of F.W. Webb. Troy will share his vast experience of the water industry with a focus on distribution. The class will detail the essential duties of an operator\, highlighting the importance of adhering to sanitary standards\, such as disinfection of new installations and preventing cross-contamination. The session will cover best practices during emergencies and general operations\, as well as the evolution of tools and equipment for increased efficiency. Safety protocols\, including trenching safety and OSHA requirements\, will be discussed. Attendees will learn to correctly identify fitted repair parts and handle the repair of aging water mains and service lines. Technological advancements—such as smart hydrant technology\, which monitor and report hydrant conditions in real-time\, as well as acoustic leak detection devices that pinpoint leaks before they become emergencies—will be introduced. Additionally\, cellular water meter endpoints that provide real-time readings and alerts will be covered. This class is designed for both new and seasoned operators\, showcasing various tools and technologies to facilitate the challenging work of water operations\, particularly in distribution. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water) \nInstructor\nTroy Ebbighausen (F.W. SUMMARY:Leak Detection and Pipe Location\, Repair\, and Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Description\nThe first part of this class\, taught by Eric Denslow of Eastcom Associates\, will cover the basic theory of pipe locating for both water and sewer utilities including ground penetrating radar. It will help operators troubleshoot difficult locates\, tools for locating plastic pipes\, and when to use specific frequencies. In the leak detection portion of the class\, participants will learn about the fundamentals of how leak detection surveys are performed and pinpointing water leaks in the system. \nThe afternoon portion will be taught by Peter Carpenter of Hymax and will review the latest fittings and services created for the water and wastewater industries. This includes but is not limited to: unique specialized large diameter (above 48”) fittings\, dismantling joints\, expansion joints\, restrained fittings\, flanged coupling adapters\, transition couplings\, and other fittings. Corrosion resistance has become a priority for components associated with any infrastructure project\, so we will focus on this trend in pipe repair. Topics will also include application selection guides\, restraint options and pipe repair statistics in the USA. This portion of the class will be formatted as an interactive educational experience. \nCredit\n6 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nInstructors\nEric Denslow (Eastcom Associates)\nPeter Carpenter (Hymax) \nProctor\nAllison Smith (Vermont Rural Water Association) \nThis class will also be offered on October 8 in Manchester\, VT. SUMMARY:Developing and Updating Your Source Protection Plan
DESCRIPTION:Class Description \nJoin staff from the Vermont Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division (DWGPD) and the Vermont Rural Water Association to learn about new tools in the world of source water protection planning. This training will focus on the key components of a source protection plan. Attendees will be introduced to DWGPD’s new online tools\, including a template and guidance document that you can use to develop your water system’s source protection plan (SPP) and/or source protection plan update (SPPU). There will be an interactive demonstration of the template and guidance document\, as well as a review of the new ANR Online Source Protection Plan Submission Form. These tools can streamline the process of creating and updating a water system’s source protection plan and help water systems stay in compliance with State of Vermont regulations. \nThe class itself will be 9 am to 12:30 pm. Starting at 1 pm there will be an optional work session that does not provide credit hours. \nClass Credit\n3 TCH (Water) \nOptional Work Session \nStay after class and work on your water system’s Source Protection Plan. Brad and Laura will be available to provide technical assistance and answer questions. No TCHs will be provided for the work session. \nAttendees are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop\, power cord\, their current Source Protection Plan\, and any pertinent water system documents. Power and Wi-Fi will be available. Links to various databases and resources will be provided for use during the work session. \nInstructors\nLaura Ranker (VT Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division)\nBrad Roy (Vermont Rural Water Association) \nProctor\nTim Russo (Vermont Rural Water Association)

SUMMARY:Cybersecurity and Internet Safety
DESCRIPTION:Description\nCybersecurity means protecting computers and computer-based technology from attacks and hackers. This has become a concern for water and wastewater systems in recent years\, but it can be hard for operators to understand the technical aspects of cybersecurity. This class will cover cybersecurity considerations for water and wastewater systems in an easy-to-understand format. We will begin by talking about the most important things that everyone can do to keep their personal information and computers safe\, like using strong passwords and learning to avoid dangerous emails. Next\, we will talk about ways to protect a water/wastewater system’s computers (as well as SCADA) and what to do in the event of an attack. We will look at recent case studies of water and wastewater systems that have experienced cyber attacks. Finally\, we will look at some resources that are available for free to help water and wastewater systems improve their cybersecurity. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nInstructor\nKatherine Boyk (Vermont Rural Water Association) \nProctor\nLiz Royer (Vermont Rural Water Association)
