SUMMARY:Permit Required Confined Space Entry/Trench and Excavation Safety
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWater and wastewater facilities contain many confined spaces which can be dangerous to operators. During the first part of this class\, we will discuss common confined spaces in water and wastewater facilities and the difference between a confined space and a permit-required confined space. This class will build awareness about the safety hazards of a confined space such as atmospheric hazards (hydrogen sulfide\, methane)\, mechanical hazards\, and blood-borne pathogens that are a concern for wastewater collection system workers. You will learn about the proper protective equipment\, procedures for entry into a permit-required confined space\, the need for a rescue plan\, and how to rescue a co-worker if the situation arises. OSHA CFR 1910.146 \nThe second part of this course focuses on OSHA 1926 and the safe procedure for operators to follow when working in or around a trench or excavation. Water and wastewater operators face dangerous situations when excavating trenches to repair water and sewer lines. Trench collapses happen without warning and cause severe injuries or death. Open trenches and pipe repairs include many other hazards such as water accumulation\, other buried utilities\, surface encumbrances\, and traffic. \nCredit\n6 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association)

SUMMARY:Lake Champlain Live
DESCRIPTION:Class Description\nJoin us aboard the University of Vermont’s new state-of-the-art research vessel the R/V Marcelle Melosira for a hands-on glimpse into the science of Lake Champlain. This training will engage attendees in learning about the current condition of our state’s largest receiving water\, as well as how our work in the water and wastewater industry impacts aquatic ecosystems. While aboard the research vessel\, attendees will be guided by Watershed Educators as they learn about the unique properties of the lake and gather data that assists researchers in understanding the dynamic nature of the lake. We will learn about ongoing research\, gain experience with science on the lake\, and deepen our understanding of the interaction between the many physical\, biological\, chemical\, and cultural variables that contribute to the health of the lake and its watershed. \nClass Credit\n2 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nLocation\nThe Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory is located on the back side of the ECHO Center on the waterfront. Attendees will be responsible for finding their own parking in Burlington. Paid parking is available at the city-owned parking lot across from the ECHO Center on a first-come-first-served basis. \nImportant Notes\nThis training takes place on the water and will be subject to cancellation if weather conditions are deemed unsafe. In the event of a cancellation up to the time of departure\, we will contact you via the phone number and e-mail address you registered with. \nPlease wear close-toed shoes and appropriate clothing to be away from shore for the duration of the training. Sunscreen\, water\, and anything else you may need for the trip should be brought with you. The R/V Marcelle Melosira does have a bathroom and sheltered cabin. \nInstructors\nAshley Eaton and watershed instructors (Lake Champlain Sea Grant) \nProctor\nBrad Roy (Vermont Rural Water Association)
