SUMMARY:Permit Required Confined Space Entry
DESCRIPTION:Water and wastewater facilities contain many confined spaces which can be dangerous to operators. We will discuss common confined spaces in water and wastewater facilities and the difference between a confined space and a permit-required confined space. This class will build awareness about the safety hazards of a confined space such as atmospheric hazards (hydrogen sulfide\, methane); mechanical hazards; and blood-borne pathogens that are a concern for wastewater collection system workers. You will learn about the proper protective equipment\, procedures for entry into a permit-required confined space\, the need for a rescue plan\, and how to rescue a co-worker if the situation arises. SUMMARY:Water Treatment: Microbiology
DESCRIPTION:This class looks at different types of microorganisms found in drinking water sources or that could possibly enter drinking water through water system vulnerabilities. Participants will learn about different types of microorganisms and their health effects. We will look at where microbes come from\, how they enter drinking water systems\, and how to protect drinking water systems from these microorganisms. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water) \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association)

SUMMARY:Trench and Excavation Safety
DESCRIPTION:Water and wastewater operators face dangerous situations when excavating trenches to repair water and sewer lines. Trench collapses happen without warning and cause severe injuries or death. Open trenches and pipe repairs include many other hazards such as water accumulation\, other buried utilities\, surface encumbrances\, and traffic. This course focuses on OSHA 1926 and the safe procedure for operators to follow when working in or around a trench or excavation. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water & Wastewater) \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association)

SUMMARY:Water Treatment: Chlorination
DESCRIPTION:Description\nWhat contamination events warrant shock chlorination procedures? We will discuss events such as flooding\, loss of water system pressure\, and shock chlorination of water storage tanks and distribution piping. Continuous chlorination requires knowledge by water system operators to ensure that public health is protected. Chlorine chemistry is an integral part of water treatment that should be understood by water system operators. Students will learn what breakpoint chlorination is and how to ensure they are achieving it at their treatment facilities. Sodium hypochlorite feed equipment can cause problems; we will look at the issues and how to avoid a sodium hypochlorite feed pump malfunctions. This training session will look at shock chlorination procedures\, water storage tank disinfection\, and pipeline disinfection. \nThe class will also look at proper dechlorination procedures when flushing hydrants or after shock chlorinating. We will explore dechlorination methods and equipment. \nCredit\n3 TCH (Water) \nInstructor\nPaula Jackson (Vermont Rural Water Association)
