Who's Behind the Faucet?
A Celebration of Vermont's Drinking Water Week

By Ashley Lucht

Every year Vermont celebrates National Drinking Water Week and this year was no exception. During the week of May 7th, 2006, students throughout Vermont celebrated with performances by the National Theatre for Children and ended with the annual Drinking Water Fair on the State House lawn in Montpelier.

Approximately 4000 students enjoyed the performance by the National Theatre for Children focused on drinking water. This year's performance was titled 'Men in Plaid' and taught children the importance of source protection and water conservation.

Another annual event that coincides with Drinking Water Week is our poster contest. Student's grades 4-6 are asked to submit artwork based on the year's theme. The artwork is judged and winners receive recognition and 1st and 2nd place winners receive a savings bond. In addition, the first place winner from each grade gets their poster printed and distributed. This year's winners are:

Drinking Water Week culminates with the Fair held on the State House lawn in Montpelier. This year Mother Nature cooperated long enough for over 150 kids to enjoy drinking water-related games, performances by the National Theatre for Children, the band 'Resolution', the WaterCycle, and the American Society of Dowsers, goodies from Morse Farm Maple Kettle Corn, and a reading of the Drinking Water Week Proclamation and an enumeration on the importance of clean, affordable, reliable drinking water by the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Conservation, Jeffery Wennberg.

Returning this year is the Drinking Water Tasting contest. Applicants were placed in three categories; Surface Water Public Community, Groundwater Public Community, and Non-Transient, Non-Community (NTNC). Our esteemed panel of judges chose the Best Tasting among the categories. Competition was tough but the Best Tasting Water Awards go to:

Surface Water: Waterbury Village operated by William Woodruff

Groundwater: Georgia Station operated by Rocco Graziano and Claude Chevalier

NTNC: Flood Brook Union High School operated by John Morse

And of course, all of this would not be possible without the support and contributions from the following organizations and individuals: Adworks, Allen Engineering, American Society of Civil Engineers - VT Section, Burlington Water Department, Champlain Water District, Cabot Creamery, Dubois and King, Dufresne & Associates, Dufresne and Henry, Earth Tech Inc., ECS Marin Environmental, Efficiency VT, EJ Prescott, Endyne, Forcier Aldrich & Assoc., GMWEA, Green Mountain Engineering, Green Mountain Multisport, HA Manosh, Hartford Town, Hartigan, Heindel & Noyes, Holland Co., Hoyle, Tanner and Associates, City of Montpelier, M & K Commercial Diving, Natgun Corporation, New England Tank Systems, Otter Creek Engineering, Phelps Engineering, Pioneer Environmental, RCAP Solutions, Red Door Design, Red Head Supply, Ruth Taylor, Simon Operation Services, Ti-Sales, USA Blue Book, US Environmental Protection Agency, VT Agency of Natural Resources, VT Rural Water Association, VT Water Supply Division, Weston Sampson, Town of Williamstown.

Finally, a special thanks goes out to the many volunteers from various organizations and water systems that, without their help, this fair would not have been possible.
